Take Steps Now for the 2016 Tax Filing Season

The IRS has launched a "Get Ready" communications and outreach campaign to educate as many taxpayers as possible about steps they can take regarding changes that could affect their ability to timely file their tax returns and get their refunds as quickly as possible.

To get ready for your 2016 tax season, visit www.irs.gov/getready.

When you get your Form W-2 in early 2017, you may notice a new entry – a 16-digit verification code. This is part of an effort conducted by the Internal Revenue Service to protect taxpayers and strengthen anti-fraud efforts…For 2017, the IRS and its partners in the payroll service provider industry will place the code on 50 million Forms W-2. This is up from two million forms in 2016…The IRS, state tax agencies and the nation’s tax industry – partners in combating identity theft – ask for your help in their efforts. Working in partnership with you, we can make a difference.

To learn more about the 16-digit verification code, visit www.irs.gov/individuals/taxes-security-together.

More Tax Information

There are numerous free options available for taxpayers to obtain tax products, tax preparation and assistance in filing their tax returns with forms and instructions available online. We've provided several links below for your convenience:

All Akron-Summit County Public Library locations will have paper copies of a limited number of popular forms available for free. Many libraries also have a master book of current Federal forms available for reproduction. Library staff can assist you in finding and printing tax forms, although legal and ethical codes prohibit staff from giving income tax advice or opinions. Normal printing and copy fees will apply to all tax forms printed from the internet or photocopied.
