Mobile Services Main Library60 South High Street, Akron, OH 44326 (330) 643-9055
The Library's first Bookmobile arrived in 1946 and began "delivering" books to the residents of Copley, Bath, Richfield, Northhampton, Springfield, & Coventry. A year later, a second truck was added, and service to agencies working with children, like summer camps, and the YMCA began. Even before the Bookmobiles arrived, however, the library was reaching out to the community with collections of books left in housing centers, union headquarters, the Detention Center, the Jewish Center, and a home for unwed mothers. Even today, Mobile Services continues to visit some of these same locations! Today, the Mobile Services department continues to extend library services beyond library buildings to children and adults in a number of different settings. Our two Bookmobiles visit schools, daycares, Head Starts, and neighborhoods during the school year and in the summer. Our Van serves many senior citizen's housing facilities and apartments using carts of materials brought inside to residents. Nursing homes and other residential facilities receive monthly deliveries of library materials via our Drop Collections. Mobile Services supports two libraries at the Summit County Jail and provides regular service to other corrections facilities for both adults and children. The Library Express Delivery Service (LEDS) offers library materials to the homebound via mail (postage is paid both ways by the Library). The Mobile Services office is open Monday - Friday from 8am to 4pm--- call 330-643-9055. |
