We seek an Assistant Youth Services Coordinator to work collaboratively within the Youth Services team and with the ASCPL system as a whole while exhibiting the ASCPL Core Values of Excellence, Service, Learning, and Diversity and Inclusion.  The position is based in our downtown Akron location, close to a variety of dining and shopping options.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Assistant Youth Services Coordinator:

  • Helps determine direction of collection growth after consulting with Collection Development and gathering branch input.
  • Works with Children’s Library & Teen and Collection Development in the development and maintenance of content for intermediate/teen customers, and adults who live and work with them.
  • Oversees intermediate and teen programming and services, and advises and provides support to Intermediate/Teen Librarians system-wide.
  • Utilizes current technology to interact with intermediate youth and teens, works with other staff to institute new technologies and stays abreast of technology trends.
  • Provides training and mentoring to Intermediate/Teen Librarians.
  • Represents the library to community groups and organizations that work with intermediate youth and teens, their families, and adults who work with them.
  • Actively engages community agencies, non-profit organizations, units of government, schools, and businesses, and establishes and maintains relationships with these contacts.
  • Works with Main Library divisions and YSO to give tours and presentations at Main Library.
  • Plans and implements regularly-scheduled monthly Youth Services meetings.
  • Provides orientation, training and support to Youth Librarians; helps with continuing education/training opportunities for Intermediate/Teen Librarians.
  • Visits branches regularly and assists with planning and designing Intermediate and Teen promotional displays, programs and outreach and assists at branch programs when requested.
  • Helps plan signature Main Library programs like Geekfest and system-wise events such as author visits;
  • Substitutes for Youth and Children’s programs where needed.
  • Helps cover Children’s Library & Teen Division desks when needed.
  • Supervises Youth Services Office in the absence of the Coordinator.
  • Maintains awareness of developments in the field of Youth Librarianship.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Required: Demonstrated comprehensive and broad knowledge of the principles and practices of library science as they apply to youth work. Working knowledge of publishers and their practices relating to intermediate/teen materials. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement intermediate/teen programs and services.  Demonstrated PC experience with proficiency in Microsoft Office software. Demonstrated ability to direct the work of others. Demonstrated ability to think and work independently as well as speak and write effectively. Demonstrated ability to use sound professional judgment and initiative. Master of Library and Information Science degree issued from an ALA Accredited School of Library and Information Science of recognized standing.

Preferred:  Extensive professional experience in the field of youth work.
