Librarian - Teen

Hours: Full-Time (37.5 hours) including evenings and Saturday and Sunday hours
Salary: Grade 11, $20.56/hour, Non-Exempt


Assist manager and staff to fulfill the Library’s mission and implement core values; advise and assist customers in a friendly and accessible manner with the selection, organization, and navigation of library materials that will be of interest to and appropriate for customers using teen materials; research and answer reference questions and provide guidance in the use of online resources; compile bibliographies of materials that address needs and interests of teens and adults who work with them; develop materials lists, reference guides and displays to promote library services; cover service points in the Teen Area, Children’s Library and other Main Library divisions as needed; provide library service with emphasis on both of the following aspects of customer and community service through programming and community engagement; perform collection maintenance duties including creating displays, weeding, and arranging materials for improved access; communicate and collaborate with Collection Development staff regarding customer and community trends and interests; assist customers with readers’ advisory and in the use of computers, printers, copy machines, e-readers, and other equipment and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Strong customer service skills, including experience handling difficult/demanding customers; demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of library science; demonstrated knowledge of children and teen interests, programs and services; demonstrated knowledge of child development; ability to plan and conduct developmentally appropriate programs for youth; demonstrated ability to think and work independently using sound professional judgment; strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; research skills using print and electronic resources; ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, Library agency staff and customers; a Master of Library and Information Science degree from an ALA accredited School of Library and Information Science required; previous customer service experience required; previous library experience preferred; previous experience with youth preferred and Ohio Public Librarian Certification preferred. Applicants with 7 credit hours or less towards completion of the M.L.I.S. will also be considered under certain conditions. Individuals hired under these conditions will begin as a Public Service Assistant III, Grade 10, Step 1, ($20.01/hr), and upon confirmation of completion of the M.L.I.S. degree will be moved to Librarian, Grade 11, Step 1, ($20.56/hr).
