About the Artist

Derek Hess
American, born 1964, Cleveland, Ohio
Lives in Cleveland, Ohio

“My father was a World War II veteran as well as an artist and the head of the industrial design department at the Cleveland Institute of Art. I remember him coming home from work and drawing the war scenes I had concocted in my head just like I described to him,” remarks artist Derek Hess, who may have been thinking of his father as he created a series of sketches portraying fish as bombers. The fish depicted here quotes Dr. Seuss’ One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish along with the words “Go ask your Dad.” Hess is best known for his figurative concert posters which expressed the mood of the underground music scene in Cleveland during the 1990’s.
