A Social Story for each of our Library locations is available through the KultureCity app.
Before the Bookmobiles arrived, before 1946, the library was reaching out to the Akron community delivering books and meeting people's needs for education, information, and reading pleasure. Through the library's Mobile Services the library extended its scope of service and sharing of resources to just about any where people gathered or lived – housing centers, union headquarters, the detention center, the Jewish Center, and a home for unwed mothers. Even today, Mobile Services continues to visit many of these same locations while adding others.
In 1946, the Library obtained its first Bookmobile and began delivering books to Summit County residents living in the outlying areas of Akron. A year later, a need for a second Bookmobile became apparent and a second one was added which extended outreach to agencies working with children throughout the county.
Today, the Mobile Services continues building on its own legacy of library service by reaching beyond the library buildings and continue serving children and adults. Rain or shine, sleet or snow, Mobile Services is on the road bringing the library to people and encouraging learning while embracing and respecting diversity in our community.
